Electric Cars to Save US Economy

The technology to convert gas powered cars to electric has been around for over 20 years. You could be spending $30 a month to power your car with electricity instead of $300 a month in gas. Take a look…

I’m not suggesting that everybody should go buy a $40,000 hybrid vehicle. Most people don’t have a fat wallet to go out spend that kind of money on a new car. That is one reason why a gas-to-electric conversion might make more sense for the average consumer.

There are many options for converting a gas powered vehicle to run 100% on electricity. In fact, you can buy really good gas-to-electric-conversion kits online for between $2,000 and $5,000.

Just imagine how many jobs would be created if every gas car was converted to electric.

The Benefits

– Greatly reduce your monthly fuel costs
– Jobs created for converting Vehicles and stations for electric
– Reduced Carbon Footprint
– Less war being fought over foreign oil
– A safety net for our infrastructure if gas prices get unaffordable

Increased domestic manufacturing is crucial for our economic recovery and converting gas cars to electric cars is the answer. Let’s take a look at some of the hurdles that need jumped to make this a perfect plan for economic recovery.

There are some hurdles that need to be jumped before this can realistically happen….

Improve existing battery technology

Battery life and charge time greatly affect the feasibility of gas-to-electric car converisons. Most of these types of electric cars only have a range of 30-100 miles. For most people, this can be fine for going to work and back, but some people also want cars that can go long distances.

Evolve the Infrastructure of gas station and convenience stores

Batteries charge slowly. In fact, for many batteries, the faster you charge them, the faster they will run out of juice. This is why creating a mechanism for changing out batteries is essential for extending the range of gas-to-electric conversions.

Conclusion

We’ve been in quite the recession lately. There have been big bail-outs and economic stimulus plans that have failed. What we really need is to increase manufacturing within the United States. If we buy most of our things from outside our borders and don’t make anything ourselves, then of course we’re going to be losing money!
So what happens when gas prices get so high that trucks can no longer run up and down our interstate highways? Everything is transported to us, like food for example. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to avoid such situations.

Electric Cars VS Gas Cars

So what’s all the beef about? I know some people think that electric cars are just for hippies who like to complain about the environment and talk about “green this” and “green that”. However, there are many other advantages to driving an electrical car…like saving money. This is not a one-sided argument though. We will also discuss the advantages of gas-powered cars.

Fuel Efficiency

You don’t have to put gas in them. Instead of paying $300 a month in gasoline, you could be spending $30 a month in electricity to charge an electric car for the same amount of miles you travel. With the ceiling for gas prices nowhere in sight, this is could be a major factor in rising popularity of electric vehicles

Maintenance

Gas cars break-down all the time. They have thousands of components, many of them are moving. Electric cars on the other hand are much more simple machines with a fraction of the moving parts of gas engines. Since they don’t use the components of a combustion engine, they basically don’t break down. Electric cars might need to have their batteries replaced at some point.

Range – How far vehicles can travel

This is currently one of the major flaws with electric cars. The best pure gas to electric conversion cars only get about 100 miles on a charge. This is great for getting to work, but not exactly the best bet if you are going on a road trip! This is the major advantage that gas powered vehicles have over electric cars. The main reason for the short range of electric cars is battery technology. It is rumored that Japan is developing the best batteries, but for the do-it-yourself person who strips out the engine of their car and installs and electric motor.

Automobile Safey

Gas and electric cars are neck and neck when it comes to safety. This is because converted electric cars use all of the major safety components of traditional gas cars. The only difference is the motor. If anything electric cars are safer because they have significantly less chance of catching on fire and exploding in an accident or fuel leak.

Fueling Time

Electric cars generally take longer to charge. As the case is with may batteries, the faster you charge them, the faster they lose their charge. This is a distinct advantage that internal combustion engines have over electric cars. In general, batteries take at least 30 minutes to charge and have optimal charge time of over 4 hours. This is great if you want to “fuel ” your vehicle while you are at work, but not so great if you need to make a long trip.

Environmental Responsibility

Notice how the pollution in Los Angeles can make it hard to breathe? Well, gas cars are a huge factor that make the air so dirty. I know there are a lot of older people that really don’t care about this, but it’s a really serious thing. If you take an airplane from Denver, CO to Los Angeles, you will notice that the air is much cleaner in Denver.

I would really like to hear your comments, particularly if you are an electrician, electrical engineer or a mechanic. Do you think electric cars are the greatest thing since sliced bread, or, do you think that we should stick with gas-powered cars forever?

The Fastest Electric Car on the Planet

Many people are surprised to hear that the fastest electric car on the planet can smoke traditional American muscle cars in a drag race. Yeah that’s right!

The “White Zombie” might not be the prettiest auto you have seen, but this 1970’s compact car accelerates like lightning. It’s even street legal! There are 60 batteries total that power John Wayland’s race car. There is no conventional engine. It started out with 69 horsepower when he built it, but now it has over 300 horsepower.

Mr. Wayland says, “We go into the den of the lion. We go to the drag strip with hot imports and muscle cars. We roll in with our electric car and knock heads with them.” That same day, his car went on to beat corvettes, mustangs and other muscle cars by over a second on average. For a 1/4 mile race, that is basically leaving the competition in the dust. In fact, the White Zombie has even set some world records for acceleration for a street legal vehicle.

Even though the car only has 300 horsepower, it is much more powerful than a gas-powered quivalent. This is because an electric car gets 100% torque. This means that, unlike a gas powered car, all of the energy goes into making the wheels turn.

How high are gas prices going to get?

If your jaw drops everytime you go to the gas pumps, then you are just like many other residents in Southern California. It’s happening everyhere. Gas prices have reached astronomical highs and there seems to be no end in sight.

So how high are gas prices going to get? If you’re worried about it, then maybe you should consider converting a gas powered car to run on electricity.

Let’s take a look at where our oil comes from. About half of the crude oil in the United States is produced within its borders. Roughly half of our imported oil comes from the Western Hemisphere. Countries like Canada and Mexico rank among our top petroleum importers. A very small percentage of our total oil comes from the Eastern Hemisphere.
Understanding how high gas prices will get depends on several factors that ultimately affect the price of oil.

1) Taxation on Gasoline and Oil Products

A big chunk of government income comes from taxing oil and gasoline. If taxes on oil imports rise, you can bet it will affect the cost of gasoline at the pumps.

2) The US Congress Setting Import Tarrifs for Oil

There are currently no tarrifs in place for crude oil, but if the prospect of creating income from this becomes great, then the US government could affect a rise in gas prices

3) Stockholders of Oil Companies

If demand more profits, then gas will go up.

4) Efficiency of Gasoline Being Used

The more gas you use, the higher your gas is going to be. It’s pretty obvious, but if you’re seriously looking at your gasoline budget, then your fuel

Self Driving Cars

We know for certain that this technology can be implemented and many major auto makers are developing and testing this technology. The advantages could potentially mean higher safety and less traffic on our roads while disadvantages could potentially mean lack of freedom and flexibility. So much for busting that u-turn, eh?

The logical implementation of these self driving while most likely include a combination of self driving and manual operation. This leaves us to ask the question, “what is the best way to use this technology and what extent should it be implemented?”

What if these software gets hacked and cuts your brakes with their computer? Will this technology limit freedoms? How many accidents can be prevented by self driving cars?

How to know when a car salesman is hustling you

We can all picture it in our minds; the the stereotypical thought of a scheming, shady, fast-talking car salesman. Are those deals really rock-bottom prices? Did they just make something sound or look better than it really is?

There is an art of making a used car look presentable. Just because the car you might buy looks good on the outside, it doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story. For example, the car might have several exterior peices replaced from a bad crash. Sure the repairs might have been made, but it probably shook a whole bunch of other stuff loose in the car.

Get the Car Facts

If you ask for the car facts from a used car saleman and they try to talk around it, then there is a good chance that the automobile was in a bad accident or has something about it’s past that would drive down the total money you might pay for the car.

Look for things you might notice later

Once you buy something used, many people tend to notice small dents and cosmetic details that were covered up by the the presentation of the used car. Minor flaws are often covered up in the best way possible so that the car can be sold.

Look at reviews for the used car dealership

There are many reputable dealers that are very honest about disclosing information about vehicles. There are also dealers that take better care of their cars. Like any business, depending on who you buy from can make a big difference in the quality and price of the product you are purchasing.

Check the odometer

If the odometer doesn’t work, beware of the car. Sometimes salesmen will say that a car has a much lower mileage than it actually has.

Check engine lights can lie

Sometimes shady used car dealers will poke out the “check engine light” with a needle or find another way to turn it off. Think about it, would you want to buy a car with the check engine light turned on? Probably not, so it’s important to beware of this short-cut when buying a car. After all, it could be a lemon!

Do research on the car you might buy

The older the car is, the more important it is to understand this research. You don’t want to buy a vehicle that is notorious for breaking down when it reaches a certain mileage. I bought a dodge spirit one time. It looked like a nice car. It was fully loaded and very clean looking. After I had it for a couple months, the transmission started slipping big time! When I did some research afterwards, I realized that the engine that my car used was the same engine used in Dodge Caravans. That same engine just so happened to have a huge track record of having the transmission fail. I could have saved a ton of money down the road if I would have just taken the time to find this info out before I bought the car to begin with!

Know what used cars are good to buy

A newer car is going to be more reliable than an old one, obviously. If you are looking at older cars from the early 90’s, there are some defnite cars that are known to be reliable. Toyota Corollas are generally good vehicles. Also Honda Civics before 1995 are also known to be really reliable. There is a pretty good list of what used cars are best to buy.
